Under stadium ground rules, a fair ball that hits anything attached to the roof is in play. The Padres challenged whether the ball struck the roof over foul territory; the call was confirmed fair on review.
“I stood there and watched it, and it was going [out],” France told ESPN. “It was staying fair. It hit a wire, took a right and the guy caught it.”
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said he thought the ball was foul; Padres manager Craig Stammen said it looked like a possible home run. Third-base coach Matt Erickson said umpire Nic Lentz had reviewed the roof rule at the pregame meeting, joking it would happen that night.
Series continues Sunday
The loss was San Diego’s first of the postseason after sweeping the Chicago Cubs in the wild-card round. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday, with Michael King facing Brewers rookie Logan Henderson.
Chourio said through an interpreter that he thought he had a chance on the ball the whole way and noticed it change direction before completing the catch.
