China’s 12th straight Asiad crown as Games close
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games closed on Sunday after two weeks of competition, with China topping the gold medal table for the 12th consecutive edition, China Daily reported, citing Xinhua.
China finished with 169 gold, 89 silver and 83 bronze medals — 341 in total — described as its best haul at an overseas Asiad. Host Japan ranked second with 83 gold, 95 silver and 91 bronze (269 overall), followed by South Korea with 39 gold, 43 silver and 68 bronze (150), according to China Daily and Sportstar’s final medal tally.
India fourth; Uzbekistan fifth on silvers
India placed fourth with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze for 85 medals overall, Sportstar reported. Uzbekistan also won 21 golds but finished fifth after collecting fewer silvers (25–24–70). Iran and Thailand rounded out the next places on the Sportstar table with 19 and 18 golds respectively.
India’s men’s hockey team delivered the country’s 21st gold on Saturday by defending its title, Sportstar noted, capping a campaign that fell short of Hangzhou 2022’s 106-medal total but still secured fourth place.
Closing ceremony and MVPs
China Daily said Thai sprinter Puripol Boonson and Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi were named the men’s and women’s Most Valuable Players of the Games. India Today reported the closing ceremony was held at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya, with the baton for the 2030 Asian Games passed to Doha.
The 20th Asian Games ran across venues in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya from mid-September through 4 October, drawing athletes from across Asia in Olympic and regional sports.
