A tragic attack on a football team bus in Ghana has claimed the life of 20-year-old player Dominic Frimpong, after armed assailants opened fire on the vehicle carrying players and staff of Berekum Chelsea.
According to club officials, the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match when “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” blocked the road and ambushed the bus. The attackers reportedly opened fire as the driver attempted to reverse, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Police confirmed that Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and later died while receiving treatment. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, with regional units deployed to investigate the scene and track those responsible.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed “profound shock and deep sorrow,” describing Frimpong as a promising young talent whose dedication reflected the spirit of the domestic league. The association also said it is working closely with security agencies and the club to ensure justice is served.
The incident occurred as the team was traveling back from a 1–0 defeat against Samartex in Samreboi, located roughly 270 kilometers from Berekum. Reports indicate that around 30 players and officials were on the bus at the time of the attack.
This latest tragedy has reignited concerns over the safety of football teams traveling across Ghana for league matches. Several clubs in recent years have reportedly faced similar security incidents on highways, raising questions about protection measures for players and officials.
Football authorities in Ghana have pledged to review and strengthen travel security protocols to prevent future incidents. The league has also expressed solidarity with Berekum Chelsea and Frimpong’s former club Aduana FC, both of whom have mourned his death.
Frimpong, who joined Berekum Chelsea on loan earlier this year, had scored two goals in 13 appearances and was considered an emerging talent in Ghana’s domestic football scene.
Conclusion: A Shock to Ghanaian Football
The killing of Dominic Frimpong has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s football community, highlighting urgent security concerns for teams traveling long distances for matches. Authorities now face increasing pressure to ensure safer conditions for players across the country.
