Hormuz first, nuclear still contested
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said US proposals remained focused on the nuclear issue while Iran’s priority was security in the Strait of Hormuz, and that Tehran had already replied. He also rejected US President Donald Trump’s remark that Washington did not know who represented Iran, saying a six-member committee under the Supreme National Security Council was overseeing the process.
Iran’s seven-day plan, presented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi after indirect contacts on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, tied reopening the waterway to conditions that have included sanctions relief, unfrozen assets and an end to hostilities. Trump publicly rejected that roadmap last week while leaving the door open to further diplomacy or renewed military pressure. The strait, which carried about one-fifth of global oil and gas traffic before the war that began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, remains the central flashpoint.
