Jurgen Klopp claimed his first victory as Germany head coach on Thursday as the four-time World Cup winners beat Serbia 2-0 in the UEFA Nations League at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
First win at third attempt
Klopp's side had drawn with the Netherlands and then lost to Greece before Thursday's Group A2 fixture. A largely rotated team responded with a dominant display in front of 68,121 spectators, according to BBC Sport.
Bayern Munich midfielder Tom Bischof opened the scoring in the 39th minute after Liverpool's Florian Wirtz struck the post. Wirtz then added the second in the 61st minute with a composed finish after a sharp first touch in the box, assisted by Maximilian Mittelstadt.
Wirtz praised after Anfield struggles
Wirtz, who joined Liverpool in a big-money move in 2025, has had an uneven start at club level but was among Germany's standout performers. "He was bursting with joy and worked incredibly hard," Klopp said, according to BBC Sport. "That was exceptional; he played a fantastic game."
Germany controlled possession and created the vast majority of chances. Debutants included goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and winger Derry Scherhant. Celtic midfielder Mika Baur came off the bench and became the 1,000th player to earn a senior men's cap for Germany, UEFA and BBC Sport reported.
Group picture and next test
The result lifted Germany to four points from three matches, behind Greece and the Netherlands in the group. Serbia remain without a point. Klopp's next assignment is a trip to face Greece in Thessaloniki on Sunday.
