LAS VEGAS — Kenneth Walker III rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and Patrick Mahomes threw for 225 yards and two scores as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Las Vegas Raiders 30-27 on Sunday to stay unbeaten at 4-0, the Associated Press reported.
It was the Raiders' first defeat of the season, the team's official website said.
Late swing in the fourth
Las Vegas took a 13-10 lead into the fourth quarter. Walker ended the third with a 76-yard run before cornerback Taron Johnson caught him from behind at the 8-yard line, and two plays later Mahomes found Tyquan Thornton for an 8-yard touchdown and Kansas City's first lead, AP said.
Matt Gay kicked field goals of 44 and 48 yards to put the Raiders back in front 19-17 with 4:53 left. Mahomes answered with a 55-yard pass to Thornton, and Walker scored from 2 yards out with 3:21 remaining to make it 23-19.
Chiefs linebacker Jeffrey Bassa then forced a fumble on the kickoff return, and Walker ran 22 yards for another touchdown on the next play, Raiders.com reported.
Kirk Cousins threw for 365 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Brock Bowers for a 20-yard score with 1:46 left, and Cody White caught the two-point conversion. Las Vegas got the ball back, but Cousins was intercepted by Xavier Nwankpa to seal the result.
Thornton hurt on key play
Thornton finished with five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns but was carted off after injuring his left ankle on the 55-yard catch, AP reported. Receiver Rashee Rice left in the first quarter with a hamstring problem.
"I keep saying it, but it's not always going to be pretty," Mahomes said. "That's a good football team, a good defense."
AP said Mahomes has won all six of his starts against the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.
"I'm really proud of the fight of our team tonight," Raiders coach Klint Kubiak said, according to Raiders.com. "Wish we would've won the game."
Kubiak also stood by a failed fourth-and-2 attempt early in the second half. "I don't regret it. I regret not getting it," he said.
The Chiefs have a bye next week before hosting the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 18. The Raiders visit New England next Sunday.
