Manchester City came from behind to take a point from Real Madrid on Thursday, with Khadija Shaw answering Linda Caicedo's first-half goal soon after the restart in a 1-1 Women's Champions League draw.
Neither team has won yet in the league phase: two games, two draws apiece, leaving them 11th and 12th on two points, according to BBC Sport.
Caicedo strikes first
City came close early, Mary Fowler heading against the underside of the crossbar in the opening 10 minutes, UEFA said. Madrid went ahead just before the half-hour when the Colombian Caicedo beat goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita with a low shot.
Shaw levels after the break
The hosts were sharper after the interval and drew level in the 51st minute, Shaw finishing powerfully from Yui Hasegawa's pass — her eighth goal in 11 appearances in the competition, per UEFA. Beth Mead had a late chance to win it but headed just over.
"Disappointed that we didn't win the game but definitely fight at the end and that's good," Shaw told Disney+ after the match.
Late Madrid goal ruled out
There was late controversy when Silvia Cristobal found the top corner for Madrid, only for the goal not to stand. According to BBC Sport, referee Silvia Gasperotti had stopped play before the shot after obstructing Mead, leaving the Spanish side incensed.
Lauren Hemp took player-of-the-match honours for City. City coach Andree Jeglertz said: "It's an OK start. It's not ideal but it's a good start. We know what is needed from us for the rest of the tournament."
Next up for City is a WSL home game against Arsenal on Sunday, followed by a Champions League visit from Paris Saint-Germain on Oct. 29. Madrid travel to Bayern Munich on Oct. 28.
