Jair is barred from running and is under house arrest with restrictions on public statements, BBC News reported. At Flávio’s campaign launch, an AI-generated image of his father endorsed the candidacy.
Flávio has pushed hardline security measures and lobbied for U.S. terrorist designations of Brazilian gangs — opposed by Lula — BBC News reported. He denies U.S. government help: “That narrative won’t stick, sorry,” he said in September, ABC/AP reported.
Polls, corruption and undecided voters
BBC Brasil’s poll tracker shows both front-runners near 40%, with Lula slightly ahead; a runoff is widely expected. About 9% remained undecided or planning blank, spoiled or no ballots in late September, BBC News reported.
Corruption surged as a top concern after a scandal involving jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro. Flávio acknowledged asking Vorcaro to fund a biopic about his father after recordings emerged; police opened an investigation into suspected corruption and money laundering over the film financing, BBC News reported. He has not been convicted in that matter. Alleged links between Vorcaro and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes — which Moraes has denied — also complicated Lula’s final stretch, BBC News reported.
