Elon Musk said on Sunday that SpaceX's artificial intelligence unit, SpaceXAI, will be renamed SpaceXSI, adopting the "super intelligence" terminology promoted by US President Donald Trump, Reuters reported.
"Yes, we will make that change," Musk replied on X to a user who asked about the possibility of renaming SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI. In separate posts, he wrote that there would be "No more AI" and that "SI" was better, according to Reuters and Fox Business.
No timeline for the change
Musk did not provide any further details or a timeline for the name change, Reuters said. At the time of its report, SpaceXAI's account on X had not been changed, and the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
It was not immediately clear whether the move would be a formal legal name change or a branding update, or how it would apply to products such as the Grok chatbot.
SpaceXAI develops Grok, which competes with chatbots from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft. The unit was created in July after SpaceX acquired xAI in a $1.25 trillion deal that consolidated the two companies, Fox Business reported. Renaming it SpaceXSI would mark its second major identity change.
Trump's 'super intelligence' order
The rebrand follows an executive order signed by Trump on September 29 directing the US government to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" instead of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI".
The order, titled "Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence", applies to public communications, government websites and reports, while congressional statutory references remain exempt until Congress passes conforming amendments, according to Fox Business.
In a speech to the UN General Assembly last month, Trump said: "From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world's will be changed to use the much more accurate term 'super' as opposed to artificial. So it's super intelligence," Reuters reported.
Musk's long focus on super intelligence
Fox Business noted that Musk has promoted the concept of super intelligence for more than a decade. He previously endorsed Nick Bostrom's 2014 book "Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies", which warned of uncontrollable super intelligence that Musk said could pose a greater danger than nuclear weapons.
The rebrand also highlights Musk's close relationship with the Trump administration. Musk was among the AI executives who met Trump at the White House on September 29, the day the order was signed, according to Fox Business.
Analysts had previously told Newsweek that the "SI" shift would be difficult to establish unless major industry leaders embraced the new terminology.
