Shai Hope carried his bat for an unbeaten 162 as West Indies chased down 352 to beat India by five wickets with 10 balls to spare in the third One-Day International in New Chandigarh on Saturday.
India posted 351 for 7 after choosing to bat. Jayden Seales struck in the third over, removing Shubman Gill for 1 and Virat Kohli for a golden duck on consecutive deliveries. Rohit Sharma (92) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (57) rebuilt before KL Rahul, playing his first innings of the series, finished unbeaten on 129 with 16 boundaries including six sixes. Seales finished with 3 for 62.
Hope rewrites the chase record
West Indies replied with 352 for 5 in 48.2 overs. Hope, who had kept wicket through India's innings, opened and stayed until the end. Amir Jangoo made 67 in a century stand before a mix-up and run-out ended his knock.
Hope's 162 not out was the highest score by a West Indies batter in a successful ODI chase, surpassing Brian Lara's 153 against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1993. He also became the first wicketkeeper-captain to score 150 or more in an ODI innings, and registered his 21st ODI hundred.
Consolation win after series already decided
Keemo Paul hit 44 before falling in the death overs. With Jewel Andrew unable to bat because of injury, Hope and Gudakesh Motie (19 not out) closed out the chase. The victory was West Indies' highest successful ODI total, beating their previous best of 331 for 5 against Ireland in 2019.
India had already sealed the series and finished 2-1 winners. The sides now shift to a five-match T20I series starting October 6 in Lucknow.
