A shooting incident during a high profile press dinner in Washington DC triggered a rapid response from law enforcement, with authorities confirming that a single suspect was taken into custody following the breach.
The event, held at the Washington Hilton, was disrupted at approximately 8:35 pm Eastern Time when gunfire was heard inside the venue. Attendees immediately took cover as security personnel moved to secure the area.
Agents from the United States Secret Service quickly escorted Donald Trump and other senior officials out of the ballroom to ensure their safety.
According to Muriel Bowser and interim police chief Jeffery Carroll, the suspect approached a secured checkpoint in the hotel lobby armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
Officials stated that as the individual attempted to move through the checkpoint, security personnel intervened. Law enforcement engaged the suspect, ultimately subduing and detaining him.
“We do know that law enforcement exchanged gunfire with the individual ... The suspect in this case, he was not struck by gunfire,” Carroll said. “Law enforcement ... they actually tackled him into the ground and handcuffed him.”
One Secret Service agent sustained injuries during the confrontation and was transported to a nearby hospital. The suspect was also taken to a medical facility for evaluation.
At approximately 9:17 pm, Trump addressed the incident publicly, stating that law enforcement “acted quickly and bravely” and confirming that “the shooter has been apprehended.” He initially indicated that the event could continue.
Roughly 20 minutes later, Trump issued a follow up statement confirming that authorities had advised evacuation of the venue and that the event would be rescheduled within 30 days.
Later in the evening, around 10:30 pm, Trump spoke at a press conference at the White House alongside officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department. Authorities reiterated that early findings pointed to a lone attacker.
At approximately 11:13 pm, Jeanine Pirro confirmed that the suspect faces charges including use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
