Neither the Ethiopian National Defense Forces nor Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's spokesperson responded to AFP requests for comment. Locals in Mekelle told AFP they feared looting while security was unsettled. A pro-government militia commander told AFP: "We have taken control of Mekelle and we are marching forward."
The 2020–2022 Tigray war left more than 600,000 dead, according to the African Union. The 2022 Pretoria peace deal was never fully implemented and an uneasy calm frayed until the latest fighting.
